Hi,
My game has suddenly developed the liking of crashing to desktop whenever I start it now.
It was fine until the other day when I had to restore my entire system including a fresh install of Windows XP and now whenever I run the game it just crashes to desktop.
I get as far as retrieving my account and the game freezes and closes and I'm totally stumped as to what to do as I've never had any problem with it before on this system (even after patching to 1.3).
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Yup. Been having random CTD's ever since 1.3. No problems w/BF2 before. Reinstalling BF2, and 1.3, and then defragging may help...
...But it may not. Rest of specs?

well for the first time since using BF2 4 months ago i got CTD today, i start getting them after using a special resolution ( 1280x1024@100hz )
went back to the preset 1280x1024@85hz the CTD haven't appeared till now
so maybe those CTD are related to special settings we set n the game which is not coded in it already
this is my own theory and for sure maybe just BS

Same problem here. Ever since 1.3, I experience a CTD or lockup when joining an online game, maybe 1 out of every 5 times I go to join.
Sometimes the CTD happens immediately after Verifying Client Data, or more often, shortly after the spawn screen appears. Lockups also occur at this point, with the screen freezing and the sound looping, obliging me to do a cold reboot. On one occasion the lockup occured within thirty seconds following my first spawn.
The problems aways occur near the join game period, however once I'm in a game, it's typically very stable.

Hi again,
When the 1.3 patch came out I installed it with no problem. The game worked fine. So it's not a problem with the patch.
Now I can't play it before it is even patched. The standard install crashes to desktop every time when I try to retrieve my account.
The only thin I can think of is a graphic issue. I updated directX with an update for 9.0c, but I don't know if that would affect it because everything else works fine.
Any techies out there with suggestions?
::::UPDATE::::
My dad also updated his directX 9.0c and BF does not work on his system any more either. It seems that the update hates the game. Any way i can remove it and reinstall 9.0c?

Hey, that gave me an idea. I've been having almost the same problems, except that it crashes to a black screen instead. Maybe the DirectX is causing the problem, I have no idea...

I purchased a 20.1" flat screen and my BF2 stopped working. I reinstalled 1.3 update and no issues after that. I'm fairly sure it was resolution related. Try reinstalling Direct X and also get a 1.3 complete updater. Also I think the suggestion from Safrout regarding the drivers is right on. I'm usually running two driver updates behind what NVidia pushes.

Ever since I installed 1.3, stability has been flaky. I played for about 2 hours today. I got 1 CTD, one unrecoverable freeze, one case of a frozen character (my character's feet were stuck to the ground; all I could do was wiggle). And just now I was experiencing 5 second pauses--about one every minute--in both the interface and game play. When I quit BF2 and restarted, entire system locked up, forcing a cold reboot (again).
FYI, when I installed 1.3, I did a full uninstall first.

Mine had a lot of flakey crashes but all seemed to quiet down once I created a bat file to boot the game as a priority application. I used the trick that I learned from this guide.
http://www.secretsofbattlefield.com/hardware1.html
Specifically the second paragraph after section 3A
I hope this helps you,
Simon

I'm getting fed up with this game now.
I just wiped my hard drive and re-installed everything fresh and I'm still having the same problem.
I can't play the game un patched and I can't play it patched. It came up with a memory error telling me my memory didn't seem sane. !?
I also can't sign in to the ea support site as my username and password are invalid even though I'm inputing them correctly.
Anyone have any ideas on what I can do now?

In recent weeks random CTD's have been occuring on my pc alot. Also when i enter my pass to my main account it says it is invalid...even though it had been working 10 minutes before. The problems keep on comeing with BF2 and im tired of trying to just get into a normal (no crashes, no invalid password messages, no freezes) game.

I as well tried to add this to my brothers computer last night and only had a quick 10 minutes to do it and couldn't make it work. His system is identical to mine (Built them both).
I will figure this out over the weekend and post what I did to fix it. I will say that when I did it on my computer, I followed the instructions regarding both renaming and making the bat file to the letter. When I was on his system, I winged it mostly from memory and at my age, it wasn't the wisest decision I made late on a Thursday.
I'll post again tomorrow and sorry for the delay,
Simon

Use older Nvidia drivers if you are using an Nvidia card. I downgraded back to 84.?? something and the crashes and lagging became a lot less common.
Also like an above poster mentioned, make BF2 run at a high priority, an easy way to do this is, run BF2 get to the login screen, alt+tab out, Ctrl+alt+Del then in the processes list right click BF2 and set priority to high. I was actually able to play for a couple hours straight last night after doing all that.
Follow the tweaking guide, but above all dump the crap new drivers.

I have no idea what Ignore Asserts is was already there it's part of the Special Forces Icon so i just added the Name and Password thing after it.
Great Idea on setting Priority useing Task Manager, been all over Microsoft site looking for a perminate way to set the .exe through windows xp, will keep up the hunt and post if I find something. Thanks

By the way I fixed my problem by using my secondary drive as my new primary and reinstalled everything.
