View Full Version : Request: Vehicle-Lite Map Pack

Greetings Map maker gurus. I'm here to ask for your help.

What I would like is a map pack with the following changes to all maps:

Replace Tank/APC spawns with Heavy Jeeps
Replace AA vehicle spawns with Light Jeeps
Remove Jets
Replace Littlebird and Attack Helicopter spawns with Transport Helicopters

That's it. If its to laborious then just make this 'Vehicle-lite' version of Karkand (i.e. USMC Gas Station/MEC Factory would each have 4 Heavy Jeep spawns).

The reason I'm asking for your help is because I want to test a theory after seeing the implementation of the 'Infantry-only' map mode in the 1.40 BETA patch.

I believe that the BF2 community doesn't want a truely 'Infantry-only' experience in BF2 because the maps are so large. Would anyone play Zatar Wetlands with no or limited transport vehicles?

Here's the thread were we are discussing this with a DICE employee. So far he has responded twice about the idea and it was mentioned in the latest Feedback report from the Development team:

http://www.totalbf2.com/forums/showthread.php?t=83529

Most Recent Developer Feedback report for 1.40 BETA:
http://forum.eagames.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=276713&highlight=#276713

With that I ask for your help to show to DICE that this should be a viable ranked option to all existing maps in 1.40 live release.

A future, more complex version was suggested by fierce here:
http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=33676

that will require modifications to all the transport vehicles models.

Fierce's version does not require editing any models. Varients will need to be created of all vehicles that need guns removed.
The total work is about a day worth. If no one gets to it I'll see what I can do when I get some spare time.

I have made a version of Karkand with strictly DPVs. I've only have the chance to play with 10 people so far but it is a lot of fun.

Yes it will. Harmor is requesting this as a proof of concept because he (And quite a few others) disagrees with a strictly infantry only game mode.

Don't spend too much time with it if its too time consuming. Karkand and Wake Island 2007 should be the first two maps done.

I don't know how hard it is to make neutered transports...but like he said its a proof of concept.

See most people will download a new map to test out before they update to 1.40 BETA. This way we can go though a dry run to see which two modes ('vehicle-lite' or 'Neutered Transport' version).

Gee wiz...someone has to come up with a bette name for the second one.

Guess it takes some time...

I already created an Infantry Only mod with transport for the Sniper vs Medic competition later this week.

BFGeeks.com article (http://www.bfgeeks.com/?page=news&id=2237)

It contains the following maps:

Strike at Karkand - 16 SP map and 64 MP map
Wake Island - 64 MP map

I took out their kit customization in the uploaded file. This addresses all the options in Fierce's Infantry Only with Transport request except for the Little Bird since they are not in those maps.

Just download, extract, copy InfantryOnly folder to mods folder and then create shortcut pointing to the mod. I didn't have time to create the mod installer for you...

For example:

Target - "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +modPath mods/InfantryOnly

Start In - "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2"

Download Mirrors:

FILEFRONT (http://files.filefront.com/InfantryOnlyzip/;5237425;;/fileinfo.html/)
RAPIDSHARE (http://rapidshare.de/files/25419333/InfantryOnly.zip.html/)

If you like it then I can add the other maps and mod installer later this week...

You did it a bit different than I did.
Removing the ammo of the mounted weapons was my first instinct as well. But, when you do so that seat becomes useless. If you remove the weapon from the vehicle's tweak you gain the ability to use your normal kit. Also, the way you did it if the same weapon is used on another vehicle it will be unoperable. Maybe that was your intent though.

I finished mine up tonight. I packed it and sent it over to the PR guys to type something up. Included Karkand, Gulf of Oman, and Mashtuur. (All modes)

Wow guys you are amazing. I can't wait to get these demos running so we can give feedback to DICE.

The effort you guys are doing now will definiately benifit the community loads!!!

I agree but that is how the guy who set up the competition wanted the mod to be. My first version had the guns removed and you could use the seat. But he had me put back the guns and just have them unusable...

Did you just modify the existing vehicle or make a copy of it so maps could have both armed and unarmed versions? I've copied handheld weapons but not vehicles yet.

I edited the original as the ability to use both wasn't requested. Creating a varient takes 10 - 15 minutes tops if it was required.
