Yeh, because needing Steam to play even SP is just uber lame... So cracks will pop-up pretty damn quickly IMO.

My understanding is that if you buy retail, you can activate on the 10th through Steam. However, if you buy the Steam download copy won't be available until the 12th/13th for some unknown reason.

i was looking at the steam forums and found that one guy has contacted steam about the retail version and this is what he got

Hello Killn4Christ,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

The retail game will be able to install and play as soon as you bring it home from your local retailer.

Only the Steam digital purchase is held until the 12th for activation.

If you have any further questions, please let us know - we will be happy to assist you.

IMPORTANT:
If you attempt to activate the game before the retail release date, you will receive the message "Invalid CD Key". You will be able to activate your CD Key on the retail release date, currently set for November 10th.
