Default Next Call of Duty in Development by Sledgehammer Games

Just a day after the "un-pleasantries" at the Infinity Ward offices, Activision has officially announced the development of a new Call of Duty title by Sledgehammer Games.

While it has been confirmed that Treyarch is developing the Call of Duty title for release in 2010, Sledgehammer is set to be hard at work on the 2011 title in the Call of Duty series. Sledgehammer is made up of former Visceral Games (Dead Space, Dante's Inferno) executives, Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey.

"2010 will be another important year for the Call of Duty franchise," stated Mike Griffith, President and CEO of Activision Publishing. "In addition to continued catalog sales, new downloadable content from Infinity Ward and a new Call of Duty release, we are excited about the opportunity to bring the franchise to new geographies, genres and players."

Probably the biggest change coming to the series in 2011 is the mention that Sledgehammer's title will "extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre." Make of that what you will.

It should be interesting to see what Treyarch comes up with, It can only be better than MW2

    No, Activision blew it.

Many are saying that the reason Activision filed with the SEC is because most everyone at IW wanted to do things differently with Modern Warfare 2. IE: The stupid stuff that's gone on with MW2 can be directly blamed on Activision. These guys that were fired allegedly were in talks with other IW employees about splitting off and forming a new studio where they could actually do things as they wanted to.

Very interesting, so no more listening to that douche 402, SWEET!!! After looking at the worst website I have ever seen (http://www.sledgehammergames.com/) I still know nothing about the company. Have they actually done any games yet or is this the first one?

If that is true then I really hope they break off and create their own game, as long as 402 stays behind

I was fixing to say that the 2 guys that lost their jobs will just form their own company like they did when they left the MOH franchise.

No, Sledgehammer is there to create a subscription based call of duty. Think fallout 3 only with a lot of suck and you have to pay for it every month. IW will still be making MW games.

Thats a novel thought, unfortunately still not true. Modern Warfare 2-s financial success and quality catastrophe is solely IW-s fault. Remember that they actually never wanted to make Modern Warfare for the PC, even less with Modern Warfare 2. And with Grant Collier leaving the development group I assume that their insight on how to make proper PC titles also left with one single man. The interviews with those two top deuchebags revealed just how little they cared about the PC platform, or actually knew about the PC gamer. With just one man gone, it appears that IW-s focus on excellence instead of mass appeal, was also gone.

Check their interviews, then focus on how badly IW is and has treated their fanbase. Even if they wanted to ruin their franchise on purpose as if it was a hostage taken from Activision, they must have set up a huge and elaborate scheme without any flaws. A more likely scenario is that they were just pushed into doing things they didnt like and one of those was MW2 on PC.

402 is part of that new IW mentality. I wish Grant Collier was still on board.

As for what do I think this will mean for Call of Duty? First of all, these are the guys working on Dead Space? One can assume they are green in multiplayer aspect, and have probably no idea how this "genre" works. Secondly, being solely created by and for Activision, the next COD will be a representation of Koticks vision, thats a terrifying thought.

It's a shame realy... after such a great history of COD games (COD2 & COD4 being the highlights), IW have f**ked it all up, and they have alienated a huge chunk of the market. EA will, i'm sure, reap the benefits of this mistake with BC2 & MOH.

Its also a great time to see how Treyarch respond to this... with they follow IW and create a huge disappointment, or with they dig in & stay with the formula that works for PC players at the risk of being visited by the "Activision Mob" for speaking agaist the Activision grain???

    Time will tell.

I think that Treyarch will do it right. I don't know if i will buy another COD game though. BC2 is amazing, and EA will cash in on IW **** up. MOH will probably get a huge boost too, being directly from MW2 PC players.

The last MoH could have been gone about very differently. There were no mod tools released, which completely turned me off to it.
